Ranking Member Warren: Congress Should Oppose Irresponsible Attempts to Unwind Measures that Keep Pressure on Russia to End its War
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, issued the following statement to mark three years of Russia’s unprovoked and illegal full-scale war against Ukraine:
“The United States worked together with a global coalition to provide military support to Ukraine and impose sanctions and export controls to degrade Russia’s war machine – giving us leverage to help secure a just peace for Ukraine. Instead, President Trump is bullying and negotiating around Kyiv, failing to enlist the power of a united G7, and rushing to make concessions to Putin that will only end up weakening Europe’s defense against renewed Russian aggression, making us all less safe.
“Russian negotiators are now trying to entice President Trump with promises of “historic economic and investment opportunities.” Congress should oppose irresponsible attempts to unwind measures that keep the pressure on Russia to agree to a just peace that preserves Ukraine’s sovereignty and ability to defend itself. The Administration should be closing off Russia’s attempts to evade our sanctions with the help of China, Iran, and North Korea and warning against doing business in Russia while it is plagued by corruption, money laundering, and other serious risks.
“I commend the bravery of the Ukrainian people who have fought on the front lines of democracy for three years. The United States Congress must not be complicit in undermining a path to peace in Ukraine.”
