Brown Applauds HUD Proposal of Important Fair Housing Rule
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, issued the following statement on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) release of its Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing proposed rule implementing a requirement under the Fair Housing Act.
“Today’s proposed rule is an important step to ensure that we are fulfilling our nation’s commitment to fair housing in all of our communities,” Brown said. “Nearly 55 years after the Fair Housing Act became law, we still have not fully implemented its requirement to combat discrimination and affirmatively further fair housing. We must all continue working to fulfill its promise.”
Brown has led the charge to protect and fully enforce our fair housing and civil rights laws. In 2020, Brown released the report “Turning Back the Clock,” highlighted the ways in which the Trump Administration had undermined fair housing and civil rights protections, including the requirement that federal funds be used affirmatively to further fair housing. In 2021, Brown chaired a hearing on the legacy of racial discrimination in our housing system that highlighted the continued harm caused by redlining and housing discrimination.
